Web 3.0 or Web3 is the term used to describe the third iteration of the Internet.
It is the overall experience of how we will access, and interact with, the world wide web.
There is a lot of excitement around Web3 because the increasing pace of technological advances, mean that we are getting closer to it every day. It represents all the possibility of how we will use internet enabled technology in the not-too-distant future!

Well in order to understand the third iteration of the internet, you will need to understand the first and second iterations. You guessed it! Web 1.0 and Web 2.0… Let’s go!

Refers to the 1990’s Internet. You could only read information on static html pages. it was slow, content poor and unreliable as access was limited to certain geographies and devices. It was interesting but also kind of frustrating.

Started at the end of the 1990s / early 2000s. Remember “flash”? Flash revolutionised website design, enabling images, games and media to be added. This was then superceded by CSS.
Smartphones connected to the Internet massively around 2007, as data, processing speeds and storage capacities increased significantly to enable a modern internet experience for business and personal use.
This is our current experience of the Internet. We can access it pretty much anywhere and get meaningful information and functionality rapidly.

This is the next iteration of the Internet. What’s to come. And we are nearly there! It is a web experience which brings together all the data, tech abilities and functionality into one place.
Some of the underpinning concepts of Web 3.0 are:
1. “Semantic web” as coined by Tim Berners-Lee himself, which refers to the “intelligence” of the Internet. It’s ability to understand more than just keywords and numbers to include images, video, sounds etc. The idea that the Internet could make sense of all the data available and provide high level actionable intelligence.
2. Artificial Intelligence woven into the Web capabilities. i.e the web is able to perform and think almost like the human mind. Replicating how we experience and process the world and reporting high level intelligent insights back to us.
3. Enhanced visual representation made available to all users. 3D graphics maybe using #virtualreality or #augmentedreality, holographic technology, or something we haven’t yet seen. Basically, it will look awesome! For example, #Metaverse or virtual worlds with avatars, human interaction and web “robots” are one way that the Web 3.0 could be experienced.
4. A uniform connected experience with no data silos. All devices are connected and can “talk” to each other. It will feel more seamless and our go-to resource for any information we need.
5. A decentralised Web 3.0 Some protagonists are particularly interested in this concept. It means that the power moves away from large centralised Internet operators and gives the web back to the people. This is possible by creating a peer-to-peer #decentralised Internet where privacy and data can be controlled by the users, including encrypted data and communications, using #blockchain to authenticate.
What does this mean for you?
Well, things are changing fast.
The future that we once only imagined, is just around the corner.
It will impact all our lives in ways that we don’t yet fully understand.
But if the last ten years are anything to go by, it will be an exciting time to be alive.
